I am Yoke Cheng, a student at the Singapore University of Social Sciences pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.
One of my greatest joys in life is being with children and nurturing their holistic development. Fostering their sense of curiosity and wonder has always been an interest of mine. I am ready to take on this responsibility further by taking care of children in home settings.
Holding a Diploma in Child Psychology and Early Education, I am certified under the Early Childhood Development Agency as an early childhood educator. Upon graduation, I had the honour of receiving the Gold Medal from the Association of Early Childhood Educators Singapore (AECES) for most outstanding graduate.
In various preschools, including St. James Church Kindergarten and Mulberry Early Learning Centre, I have worked with pre-nursery, nursery and kindergarten students. Having studied child development theories under the likes of Lev Vygotsky, Jean Piaget, Abraham Maslow and Erik Erikson, these principles have guided me in shaping my educational practices. These same practices will be applied during my babysitting sessions!
Through formal training in school and my personal experiences, my philosophy for teaching has been shaped into one that is family-centred and strengths-based. I believe every child is competent, curious and ready for active and meaningful relationships to foster their learning.
During sessions, I don’t believe in just handling routine care, I believe in embedding learning opportunities during these routines. I find it critical to create activities that will spark children’s interests and allow them to be protagonists in their knowledge-creation.
My specialisation is in Early Intervention, where I have learnt about various childhood disabilities and disorders. I have the most experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Global Developmental Delay (GDD) and Down syndrome (DS).
If it fits into my schedule, I would be more than willing to follow children to their intervention or therapy sessions so I can continue the transfer of skills taught during those lessons to my time caring for the child.
With my experience in music, I taught piano lessons for 3 years. I love using music with children and cultivating an appreciation for the arts. In the future, I aspire to become a music therapist.
I always do my best to build a strong collaboration with parents and family, after all, they are the child’s first and most important teachers. I look forward to working with families from diverse backgrounds!
